Palm Oil Mills

Palm Oil is extracted from fresh fruit bunches otherwise called as FFB by means of mechanical process and the quality of crude palm oil.


    Palm Oil is extracted from fresh fruit bunches otherwise called as FFB by means of mechanical process and the quality of crude palm oil. 

    Palm oil and kernel is the primary product obtained in the palm oil mill and biomass as secondary by product. 
    The process stage of palm oil mill consists of sterilization, stripping, digestion and pressing, clarification, purification, drying and storage. And for the kernels, there are stages such as nut/fiber separation, nut conditioning and cracking, cracked mixture separation and kernel drying and storage.
    The dried kernels are further crushed by mechanical process/solvent extraction plant for extraction of crude palm kernel oil.

    Sterilization being the primary stage where the bunches are sterilized with live steam at 3kg/cm2 resulting in the deactivation of the enzyme lipase and prevents build-up of free fatty acids. The sterilized bunches are conveyed to stripping section where the fruitlets get detached and are then taken for further processing to the oil recovery section. The stripped bunches coming out of the stripper are conveyed outside the process plant and they can be used as raw material for boilers.

    The obtained fruitlets from the stripper are fed to the digestor and the purpose of digestion is to disrupt the mesocarp of the palm fruit and to breakup maximum quantity of oil bearing cells to facilitate oil release. The hot digested mash is then fed to screw press to extract oil from it. The oil, water and sludge mixture coming out of the screw press further goes to Oil Purification section. The press cake obtained after pressing, containing nuts and fibers is further sent to the Nut Recovery Section.

    The oil-water-sludge mixture obtained after pressing is pumped to clarifier and allowed to settle. Here the oil is separated from the sludge and water. The clarified oil still contains small amount of dirt and solid particles and hence needs to be purified. This is done in the purifier centrifuge.

    The purified oil contains a small amount of moisture, which needs to be removed before finally sending it to storage and is usually done by vacuum dryer and vacuum pump. The dried oil is then pump to storage.

    The Press cake obtained from the screw press is a compact mass having high moisture content and it is fed to paddle screw conveyor, which helps in breaking up the compact mass. The sufficiently loosened mass of fruits and nuts goes to the vertical separating column where the fibres are separated out from the upward airflow through cyclone separator and get collected at the bottom. The so obtained fibre are reused as boiler fuel.

    The nuts being heavier drop to the bottom of the separating column and are directed to the rotating nut polishing drum. The polishing drum removes the fibre residues attached to the nuts and polished nuts coming out of polishing drum are taken for kernel recovery.

    Polished nuts from the Nut recovery section are cracked using Nut Cracker/Ripper mill and using winnowing technology dust, small shell particles and dirt are separated from the cracked mixture.

    Balance mixture of kernel and shell is fed to water mixture tank and this mixture is pumped using the hydro cyclone pump, where kernel and shell separation takes place.  The separated kernel is sent to the drying silos and the dried kernel is bagged or taken for further processing of extraction.
